Marijn van den Heuvel

Mechanical Engineer

As a creative engineer, I enjoy tinkering—designing all kinds of cool, weird, and complex creations.

I primarily design using various CAD programs. Beyond mechanical work, I also delve into electronics using Arduino and ESP32 boards, programming and integrating them into innovative projects.

With 15 years of experience as a mechanical engineer, I've used many CAD software tools. My current favorite is FreeCAD, which includes CAM and FEM capabilities and is parametric.
It still has some stability issues that need to be addressed before it becomes mainstream, but it's great for small projects.

I've also worked extensively with SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Fusion 360, Inventor, and AutoCAD—ranging from Pro/E to AutoCAD, from Teamcenter to SolidWorks PDM, covering CAM, FEM, and motion analysis.

For more organic designs or high-quality renders, I turn to Blender 3D.

One of the most exciting parts of designing in 3D is seeing the final product. But if you can't build it right away, or want a preview before investing further, 3D renders are a great solution.

I've learned to create beautiful renders in Blender. I also perform kinematic and fluid simulations, as well as animations. Examples can be found in the image section below.

I even created a FreeCAD icon pack in Blender, demonstrating how powerful Blender is for 2D work. The icons are generated using a script that renders everything with a single button press.

I’ve also done renders for bathrooms, workshops, and kitchens.

Beyond computer work, I’m also very hands-on. I own a resin 3D printer, an FDM 3D printer, and a CNC machine.

I use these tools to create various practical and fun projects—almost always of my own design. For CNC work, I use FreeCAD and ESTLcam for CAM.

I also have an electronics workstation for soldering and building custom electronics. I've built multiple 3D printers and a CNC machine.

Other fun projects include a lightsaber, a camera rail, and an arcade cabinet.

Online, I connect with fellow makers through Twitter, where I'm known as MisterMaker.
